SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions are closed for the year. Unless you are submitting work for "The Barbarian" or "Red".
Short Stories: 2000-6000 words (we will occasionally accept stories that go over).
Flash Fiction: 200-1000 words.
Serial Installments: 20,000 (and over) words. Email us a sample (about 5000 words) and a synopsis.
Genre: Fantasy.
Payment: None. But we aim to pay our authors 2¢ per word in the future.
Language: English (American English is preferred).
Rights: If your story is accepted, you're giving us first electronic publication rights and non-exclusive subsequent publication rights. This means that we get to be the first to publish your story, and then, after it's been put up on the website, we can stick it in a printed book or make it into a podcast (if your story becomes our choice story for that year), as long as we give you credit. We don't, however, own your story. After it goes up, you are free to sell it for millions of dollars or cut a film deal without needing our approval, as long as the people who buy it know that they're buying it non-exclusively.
Multiple: No.
Simultaneous: Yes. But notify us IMMEDIATELY if your story is accepted elsewhere.
Reprint: No. Sorry.
Publisher's Note: We do not read in November and December. Submissions made in those months will not be responded to until late January.
Please send science fiction to Kasma Magazine or New Worlds Podcast. Keep in mind, we do publish science fantasy.
Reader's Poll: Each year, we hold a voting poll for our reader (on our homepage) to determine our "Choice Story". The poll will enable you to choose any number of your favorite stories from that year. It will open in November (when submissions close) and close at the end of the year. The story with the most votes will be made into a podcast, read by Lawrence Rosales. The podcast-version of this story will appear on the podcast page of our website, as well as appearing on the Earth2Network.

Stories must be:
We like to see:
- Formatted in Standard Manuscript Format: Follow the guidelines (set here: shunn.net). Hint: we find Courier New (12 points) easiest to read.
- Fantasy: We publish stories that fit under one of these sub-genres of fantasy (shown here: cuebon.com). But our favorite types of fantasy remain to be Swords and Sorcery, Heroic and Low Fantasy. We also prefer our stories to be set in a secondary (fictional) world.
- Individual work: Stories that need readers to have read or know something else will not be accepted. In essence, this means we are not accepting a chapter of your novel or fan-fiction. Stories that are linked to something else of your own creation, but still whole and understandable in themselves are okay.
We like to see:
- Stories that present new views on the fantasy genre, moving away from good vs. evil and trying new things that are not often seen in fantasy. Even though we like stories to be set in a secondary world, we still like them to reflect the same kind of hardships and struggles and (even) unhappy endings seen in this world. Life is a bumpy and unexpected ride, and we would like to see that in your story.
- Stories that leave the reader thinking.
Send your story to redheadmagazine@gmail.com with the subject: (Submission: Your Story Title). In the body of your email include your name (or pseudonym), a brief summary of your story (1-2 sentences + sub-genre), how you came across our magazine (this will help us for the future), and a word count. You can include any prior experiences/publications (optional). Please attach your story in WORD format.
We aim to respond within 14 days. Please do not query regarding a submission's status until 30 days have passed. After that, you can send us an email with the subject: (No Reply: Your Story Title), and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Please include the date you made your submission.

Please Note: We don't care if your name is Stephen Janovski or Stephen King. We don't care if you're friends with the editors at The New Yorker or Cemetery Dance. What counts with us, is the merit of your story, so please don't expect us to accept your work simply because of who you are or who you know.
